The Discover It card offers 5% cash back on rotating categories and for the third quarter of 2014 (July through September), that category is gas stations. Every quarter, we can receive 5% cash back on spending of up to $1500 in the quarter’s category. That’s a potential $300 cash back every year on up to $6000 in spending. The card has no annual fee and no foreign transaction fees so it’s a great card to keep around for a long time and continue to earn the bonus year after year.

(In the interest of full disclosure, I do receive a referral commission for successful applications through my website. I always include the best offer I can find regardless of commission. If you choose to use my links, as always, thank you very much for your support!)
You do need to activate the category bonuses every quarter and you can do it on the Discover Cash Back Calendar Site by logging into your account.
I just got my Discover Card recently mainly for the portal shopping bonuses. I’ve been finding the Discover shopping portal to frequently be the winner in cash back when it comes to online shopping, something I do a lot. And while I have it, I am going to take advantage of the quarterly spending bonuses as well to earn that extra cash back.
Maximizing the Gas Station Cash Back
Gas is probably a large expenditure for most people so the 5 points per dollar is a nice bonus to have. However, if you don’t meet the $1500 to maximize the bonus, don’t forget that gas stations also sell gift cards to other merchants. I have seen many different merchant gift cards at gas stations including the following:
- Barnes and Noble
- Home Depot
among others. Many gas stations also sell $500 prepaid gift cards as well at a $3.95 fee. You can buy these there and use them for your other spending. This will effectively bump your general spending cash back to 4.2% on all spending once you take into consideration the paid fee.
